Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers

Where did they go? What happened to the days when the worst thing George could lose was a marble?

And what of his dreams? He made plans, lots of plans. He tried to make them come true, he really did. But they got lost along the way.

He was never lucky in love. He tried bless him. He wooed a few but always lost out to other men. So unfair.

He would lose bets, lose at card games, lose jobs. His team lost every football match.

He spent his life searching, seeking, trying. Losing.

The other night some of his contemporaries were chatting over old times in the pub. ‘What happened to him?’ one asked pointing to George who was sitting alone in a corner mumbling into his half of beer.

‘Lives in a home apparently’ said another. ‘They say he lost his marbles’

They all laughed.

George didn’t. He had one more thing to do. That cackling lot over there wouldn’t be laughing much longer. This was one battle he was determined not to lose. All he had to do was come up with an idea. Sadly though, just then he lost his train of thought.

Poor George.

  1. Hi Keith - poor George ... he knew his mind, but his mind had lost its marbles ... can see that happening - people can be cruel, like small kids -- leaving the odd one out. Cheers Hilary

  6. oh poor George indeed, but your story has another side I believe and the humour masking the pain. I really enjoyed the marble at the start and at the end - it tied up the story really nicely.

  8. Nicely done. I like the symbolism of the marbles and the play on words. Sounds like George might of had enough tonight. Better luck next time (lol).

  9. Some people really do seem to have a dark cloud over their lives. Sorry bunch of old pals George had, to sit and laugh at him for his failures in life. I'm hoping his mind clears and he hatches a brilliant plan to put them in their place!
